Everywhere we talk about Fortnite. Your children and nephews play it out of control. Your parents and your partner have no idea why you are so busy playing it and consult whoever it is to decide if they let you continue or if they disconnect you.
Here we do not stop telling you that it is the game of the moment, a worldwide success in the entertainment business, an epic social phenomenon. But every day a colleague, a brother-in-law, a friend throws a restlessness at us. So here we put together this guide for dads, moms, uncles, and grandmothers disoriented to perhaps the most widespread digital fanaticism in this decade (more even than what was the fury of Pokémon Go ).
1) What is Fortnite about?
First things first: the Fortnite with which the kids are excited is called Fortnite Battle Royale (the Fortnite Save The World has a different dynamic).
As the name says, it is a game of the genre “real battle”. This means that it does not have such a predefined history. What is there is a map and players that go through it and try to make others die before them.
To survive, then, players have to form teams, explore the territory, get weapons and resources, build, hide and move, defend and kill.
A game begins with the arrival of all players on an island and ends when there is only one left alive (or one team). In the middle, everything can happen. In that sense, it could be said that Fortnite puts into play, in addition to the fine motor skills of action video games, social skills, tactical and strategic thinking, design, ingenuity, and creativity.
2) How do you play Fortnite?
Each Fortnite player chooses a pseudonym and is assigned an avatar, that is, a character that will identify him in all games.
There are different ways to play Fortnite.
– Playground: a mode of practice, where players have unlimited lives and can travel, build and practice on the map for a certain time.
– Alone: the player participates individually.
– Duos and Squadrons (“squads”): the player participates with a couple or a team (of 4 members) that can form with their contacts or with strangers through the pairing that makes the system.
– Battles 50 v 50: games in which two squads of fifty players each face each other.
The dynamics of the game begin with a trip in a flying collective that crosses the island. Each player decides when he wants to jump from the collective, and then plans with the body and with a hang glider until he reaches the point where he wants to start playing.
In the territory, he obtains construction resources (wood, metals, etc.) with a “peak” (“ax”) and has to explore to obtain weapons and other offensive and defensive equipment. The goal is to be the last one (player or team) standing. And the map of the island is becoming increasingly narrow by a storm that surrounds it. That is, as the minutes pass “the eye of the storm” shrinks and this forces the rivals to cross, attack and kill each other.
3) How long is a Fortnite game?
This interests many parents and many pairs of players when they find them with the nose on the screen and say: “Wait for this game to end. ”
The point is that as you play online with other users, unlike other games, there is no way to “pause” the Fortnite. If one interrupts a battle for more than a moment, he will likely die at the hands of another player or affect his teammates.
So, the duration of a match depends primarily on the ability (and luck) of the player: how much he can stay alive. Me, just a few minutes. But the games are not infinite. The advance of the “storm” is what marks the passage of time and ensures an end after about 20 minutes (sometimes more, sometimes less).
4) Is Fortnite addictive?
We do not have solid research because it is a very recent phenomenon (the game debuted in 2017). There are some facts, details, and ideas (from experience or common sense) to add to the debate and domestic decisions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently stated that “addiction to video games” is a disease. According to this new classification, the first symptom is the loss of control over the frequency, intensity, and duration of the activity.
In that, you have to attend to Fortnite players. The games are relatively short, but in general, they want to play one behind the other and that makes many spend whole nights in battles.
.Apart from the incentives offered by the same game (such as its colorful landscape, the missions, and its rewards), it is common for these situations to extend the game time:
– they kill you fast, then go back to another game to get the urge (with a fit of sometimes insatiable anger).
– You get some achievements during the game, such as killing some rivals, good constructions, ingenious plays or good survival time, but it makes you want to perfect yourself and reach a higher place in the results table.
– You win a game, and the victory is so sweet that you want to get another.
“As with betting, it ‘s hard to get away when you think good luck is just around the corner, ” says psychologist Lisa Damour, a teenage specialist.
That is why it is convenient that, as with social networks (in which we also have a performance and reward and stimulate us with “likes”), ways of measuring the game time reasonably are sought.
Perhaps it is useful to agree on a limit of daily games or the times and days in which it is played. Damour recommends setting the “limits positively”: rather than opposing the Fortnite, supporting and supporting the activities of the children outside the game.
5) What does it take to play Fortnite?
One of the reasons for the success of Fortnite Battle Royale is that it is a multiplatform game like few others. This means that you can play practically from any computer with an internet connection.
– On Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ( PS4 ) consoles.
– On the Nintendo Switch portable console.
– On iPhone phones.
– And on computers ( desktop PCs and laptops).
It is expected that soon the arrival of the game to some Android phones. But it is not yet clear from what day or on what models. The company did confirm that it will not be available on Google Play, but will have to be downloaded from its website.
